One of the most outlying of the volcanoes in Auvergne, Mount Saint Loup, erupted in olden days and spat black lava out over the surrounding area. Nowadays the mountain is simply a peaceful landmark, visible from a long distance. But its dramatic past is told by the black basalt evident everywhere in the surrounding nature and buildings.

A stroll along the quays, through Agde's narrow streets or in the town's fine museum leaves no doubt that Agde is one of Europe's oldest towns. The Greeks founded Agde in the 5th century BC. Until the 1800's it was one of the major ports in France because of its natural harbour on the last bend of the Hérault River on its way to the Mediterranean, just one mile away. 

Today the river and the harbour are still brimming with life and atmosphere. Nowadays it is only fishing boats, pleasure yachts and barges, which tie up in Agde. The row of picturesque houses along the quay no longer houses merchants but are now restaurants that serve freshly caught fish and seafood.

Agde is undoubtedly the paradise of the South of France for lovers of seafood, fish, wine, sun and sand. 

The mild climate with over 300 sunny days a year is an invitation to enjoy an outdoor life - also well after the summer season. Bathing enthusiasts and sun-worshippers can enjoy the miles of beaches along the Mediterranean coast.

The Domaine des Chenes is located only about 4 miles from the wonderful sandy beaches at Le Cap D'Agde.

Closest airport is Montpellier which is around a 45 min drive.

Other airports at Nimes, Carcassonne and Perpignan can be reached in around an hour and a half.
