Property in La Grande Motte - A Guide to La Grande Motte

La Grande Motte is a large residential development built in the 1965 when a lot of the marshland that made up the area was reclaimed by the government. Its intension was to create a new residential holiday complex centred around a marina in order to target the increasing demand for tourism, specifically the yachting fraternity.

Grande Motte property consists of large pyramidal apartment blocks, with shops, restaurants and bars on the ground floor and residential units above. Most people have a “Love it” or “Hate it” opinion to the Grande Mote’s distinctive styling, but look closer and you’ll see that Grand Motte property has much more to offer than meets the eye.

It’s not just large pyramidal blocks of apartments. The centre of the development is largely pedestrianised, and once you look away from the apartment blocks you’ll see campsites, open spaces, recreational areas, individual villas as well as small “Holiday Villages”. These villages are made up of smaller houses and apartment buildings.

Like most developments with a coastal setting, Grande Motte property prices depend very much on where in the development you are. Obviously a sea view will command a much higher price that an inland view. I’ve seen 1 bed apartments advertised at around 100,000€, while the same day seeing a studio with a direct view over the marina and the sea for sale at 200,000€. At the same time I’ve seen a 3 bed apartment with balconies off each bedroom, a small garden and parking for three cars advertised at 210,000€. So you see, with Grande Motte property it’s all about the position.

The heart of La Grande Motte is often considered to be its marina. This has 1374 permanent berths and 30 day berths. It also has 5 berths specifically for catamarans.

The marina hosts regattas every fifteen days from 1 st October to 15 th March.

There is the “ Espace Grand Bleu” water park, campsites and tennis courts.

Beaches at La Grande Motte are well looked after, clean and partly supervised by lifeguards. In 1998 La Grande Motte was commended by the government for its clean beaches and respect of the environment in its development programme.

La Grande Motte is only about 15 minutes from Montpellier airport and less than an hour from Nimes airport. Both these airports offer flights to and from the UK with Ryanair into Stansted, while Montpellier also has flights with British Airways into Gatwick.
